Waterdale is now the site of a major shopping centre in Doncaster, but back in the 18th century it was a village in its own right surrounded by glorious open countryside. Despite being so close to such a major racing town, steeped in St Leger history, the village held its own races on Tuesday 30th May 1775. The meeting took place over open fields on the edge of the village and was restricted to 3 year old fillies. The favourite was Sir J Pennington’s Babraham Blank filly, but she had to settle for fourth place behind Mr Hutchinson’s Turk filly. There are no further records of meetings taking place in the village.
